The Shard of Lies
PREFACE
After Archimonde's defeat in the west, the remaining forces of
the great demonic army, known as the Burning Legion, were left
leaderless, acting as enforcers to their rebellious Scourge
underlings. Eventually, the champion of the Scourge, Arthas,
returned, and led a revolt against the Legion's commanders in
Lordaeron. Those commanders were Balnazzar, Detheroc, and
Varimathras. These three were of the nathrezim, a race of demons
renowned throughout the cosmos as cunning, duplicitous, and
self-serving to the bitter end. Arthas was defeated thanks to
the treachery of his lieutenant, the banshee Sylvanas Windrunner,
who aided the nathrezim in attacking him. However after driving
Arthas out, their alliance quickly fell to pieces, and Sylvanas
systematically defeated the demon commanders one by one, and
eventually took control over the remains of Lordaeron's Capital
City. Her force of undead, who had wrested their will from the
Scourge, came to be known as the Forsaken.
Meanwhile, another faction arose within the ruins of Lordaeron,
led by former holy men of the Church. This force came to be
known as the Scarlet Crusade. Most were driven mad by the ordeal
of losing Lordaeron, and their leadership degenerated into
zealous insanity. They came to believe that all who were not
part of their order were tainted by the Plague, and so were
condemned equally alongside the undead. The Crusade came to be
the enemy of not just the Scourge and the Forsaken, but the
Horde and Alliance, as well.
The Scarlet Monastery within the Tirisfal Glades has as such
played host to a number of daring raids commissioned by the
Horde and Alliance. The chamber where the Crusade's champion
Herod makes his home has become well known amongst the
adventuring peoples of Azeroth, adorned as it is with statues of
men and women who martyred themselves in the Crusade's service.
One of these statues is of Holia Sunshield, who died, they say,
as a result of injuries she sustained while killing the
nathrezim Beltheris.
