Midnight in the Graveyard
of Plenty
PREFACE
Lordaeron was once the pinnacle of human civilization in Azeroth,
rivaled only by Stormwind in the far south. It was seen as a
centre of religious enlightenment and prosperity. Lordaeron's
close ties to the magocratic city-state of Dalaran also made it
ripe for studies in sorcery.
When the Scourge came to Lordaeron, all of that was destroyed.
An insidious, magical plague was distributed to the citizenry,
and many were turned into the walking dead, unswervingly loyal
to the will of the Lich King. Though pockets of resistance,
particularly along the southern coast, still held out, Lordaeron
became a horrific shadow of its former self. Eventually,
Sylvanas Windrunner rebelled against the Scourge and managed to
free herself, and many others, from the Lich King. After a
gruelling power struggle, she claimed the Capital as her base of
operations and with her force of free-minded undead, the
Forsaken, she waged unceasing war against the Scourge who would
conquer them once again, as well as the human forces abroad who
see the Forsaken as abominations.
The Forsaken themselves are a mixed bag. Though they all possess
the memories of their former lives, it has become popular
practice to cast off many aspects of those lives and embrace
their condition. Many of the Forsaken have changed their names
in one form of this. However the traumatic ordeal of undeath has
led to a fair amount of psychosis amongst them, and though they
still function and can interact with other peoples and ideals,
it has largely led to a society of the deranged. The Forsaken
tolerate the darkest aspects of their humanity, they freely use
demonic magic, they openly torture their prisoners, and the
sociopathic tendencies of many of its members is ignored.
This is particularly true of the situation in the Hillsbrad
Foothills, where the Forsaken-held Tarren Mill is a staging area
for brutal attacks ordered by the High Executor Darthalia
against the towns of Hillsbrad and Southshore, where the
remaining humans of the area have managed to find some security.
Despite allying with the Horde, who in contradiction to their history of
violence with the humans now seek peaceful resolution with them,
the Forsaken's disturbing campaign continues unabated.
