Metal Fatigue
PREFACE
The goblins are an ancient and industrious race from Azeroth.
Their ingenuity and innovation been influencing the realm,
particularly in the field of engineering, for thousands of
years. However coupled with their intellect is a streak of
recklessness and an insatiable greed. Goblins are renowned for
sacrificing personal safety for the sake of their craft. The
engineering discipline has thus divided into two major schools -
goblin and gnome. Where the gnomes specialize in fantastic
devices with a wide range of uses, goblin engineering focuses
largely on bombs and rockets.
However for the goblins, engineering often becomes a means to an end,
and that end is trade. Their society is built upon acquisition and
profit, and most goblins fall under the influence of one of the cartels
based out of their island home: Undermine. The largest by far of these
is the Steamwheedle Cartel, which has substantial holdings throughout
Azeroth, including Ratchet, Everlook, Gadgetzan, and they even finance
the Blackwater Raiders of Booty Bay.
After
the Dark Portal to Outland was reopened, a group of goblin scientists
working for the Steamwheedle Cartel, known as BOOM - the Braintrust of
Orbital Operations and Mechanics - led an expedition into the wilds of
the Netherstorm, where they built a research and development station
known as Area 52. Though it began as a secretive base, Area 52 has since
become the base of operations for the Aldor and Scryers in Netherstorm,
as well. BOOM also operates a smaller outpost, Cosmowrench, as a staging
area for attacks against the blood elves of Tempest Keep.
Outland was once Draenor, the homeworld of the orcs, ogres, draenei, and
many other creatures. However the elder shaman Ner'zhul, hoping to gain
access to new worlds, opened many unstable portals that shook the world
to its core, and in the aftermath of the magics he unleashed, Draenor
was blasted apart. Outland was the most substantial portion that
remained intact, suspended within the Twisting Nether. Netherstorm is
the name given to the area of Outland that still persists but remains
the most devastated of all of Outland. One must watch one's step, for
falling into the Twisting Nether means falling for all eternity.
