Durotar Skies
PREFACE
The
history of the trolls is a long and bloody one. Centuries before the
night elves came to power, the trolls controlled much of ancient Azeroth,
holding two far-reaching empires - the Amani empire in the north, and
the Gurubashi in the south. The Gurubashi was made up of the
blue-skinned jungle trolls, and their seat of power was Zul'Gurub, a
city in Stranglethorn Vale.
After the night elves came to power, the trolls' holdings shrank
exponentially, and after the Sundering they had to fight for mere
survival. In an effort to increase their powers, a cult of jungle troll
priests, known as the Atal'ai, attempted to summon one of the darkest
gods of their pantheon - Hakkar. With Hakkar behind them the Gurubashi
were unstoppable, however Hakkar demanded blood sacrifices for his
service, and many trolls were killed. Eventually, the tribes of the
Gurubashi rose up to challenge the Atal'ai. The tribe to spearhead this
was the Zandalar, one of the oldest known troll tribes.
Hakkar was banished back to the Nether, and the Atal'ai were exiled to
swamps north of the Vale. The Gurubashi Empire had fallen. The Zandalar
left Stranglethorn to the jungle trolls, and the remaining tribes vied
for territory and power over one another.
The
Darkspear tribe were a smaller, less violent tribe of jungle trolls, and
as such the civil wars in Stranglethorn Vale eventually forced them into
exile. They lived abroad for millennia until they were found by Thrall
and the orcs. The Darkspears allied with the Horde and travelled with
Thrall to Kalimdor. They made a home for themselves on the Echo Isles, a
small archipelago along the southern coast of the orcs' nation of
Durotar.
Unfortunately, just as they settled, they were driven from their homes
by an fleet of human ships commanded by Daelin Proudmoore, who had a
vendetta with the orcs after the Second War. Though Proudmoore was
defeated and the Echo Isles eventually reclaimed, the trolls have been
largely baseless ever since.
Though the fleet was sunk and Proudmoore killed, a band of his loyalists
took control of his ruined base of operations, Tiragarde Keep, and from
there launched attacks against the orcs. Many of the trolls assisted the
orcs in bringing the humans of Tiragarde Keep down once and for all.
Meanwhile, back in Stranglethorn Vale, the Atal'ai had ingratiated
themselves once again with the leaders of the Gurubashi. They planned an
elaborate rite to summon Hakkar once again. When the Zandalar heard news
of this, they sent a small band of emissaries to Yojamba Isle. Lacking
the strength they once boasted, the Zandalar were required to enlist the
aid of outsiders to stop the threat of Hakkar. Many trolls of the
Darkspear tribe answered the call to defend their former homeland.
