Dream's End Part IV:
Sentinel's Tale
PREFACE
Due to the treachery of Illidan Stormrage, after the first Well
of Eternity was destroyed, a second was created atop Mount Hyjal.
The night elves swore to protect it, and Tyrande Whisperwind
founded the Sentinels to do so. The Sentinels became the
military arm of the night elves. Primarily composed of women,
the Sentinels were led by the Priestesses of the Moon, who
worshipped the moon goddess Elune and used her blessings to aid
them in battle. For the next ten thousand years they built up
their defenses surrounding Mount Hyjal with the help of the many
woodland creatures, such as dryads and Keepers of the Grove, to
aid them.
Among the more bestial creatures who allied with them were the
hippogryphs. These mythical, intelligent beasts brought the
night elves much-needed air support, and many migrated up to
Ashenvale from the southern Feralas for this purpose.
Eventually, the Sentinels began mounting the hippogryphs and
using them to attack from the air.
This time became known as the Long Vigil. Shortly after the Long
Vigil ended, marked with the destruction of the World Tree
Nordrassil, the new arch-druid, Fandral Staghelm, created
Teldrassil, a new World Tree, in the hopes of replacing the
energies lost by Nordrassil. Within its upper canopy, the city
of Darnassus was established, and night elves society quickly
came to centre itself there.
