Dream's End Part I:

Druid's Promise

PREFACE

Ten millennia ago, the night elves cultivated a decadent society, drunk on the magical power they drank from their mystical Well of Eternity. Their beloved Queen Azshara, however, became so intoxicated that she sold out her world to the lord of the Burning Legion. The first demonic invasion ravaged the night elves’ society, but a resistance, led by Malfurion Stormrage, arose to challenge her.

Malfurion’s brother, Illidan, was one of Azshara’s sorcerous followers, and while Malfurion and his love, Tyrande Whisperwind – High Priestess of the Moon Goddess Elune, managed to convince Illidan to join them for a time, he eventually betrayed them to Azshara in their final attack. In the battle that followed, the Well of Eternity was destroyed.

Illidan, unable to cope with the loss of his precious magic, took waters from the Well and after its destruction, used them to create a new Well atop Mount Hyjal. For this crime, he was imprisoned beneath the mountain.

Malfurion founded a school of druidism to replace the dangerous arcane arts Azshara had touted, and, in honour of their demigod teacher Cenarius, called their order the Cenarion Circle. With the help of the mightiest dragons, they created Nordrassil, a gigantic tree atop the new Well, which would shield it from the Legion’s prying eyes, and promised the night elves’ immortality so long as it stood. Nordrassil was maintained by the Emerald Dream, an ethereal realm existing overtop of Azeroth, the bizarre dream-realm of the green dragons, and their mistress Ysera. The Emerald Dream is at the core of druidic beliefs, and is sacred to the night elves.

When Archimonde returned and led the demons against Azeroth, the night elves were forced to sacrifice Nordrassil to destroy him. Though their plan was successful, they had given up their immortality. In the aftermath of the tragedy, that decision would create a rift within the Cenarion Circle.
